The House Sparrow Passer domesticus (or le Moineau domestique in French) lives in the rural villages of this area in some numbers. There are plenty of old buildings providing nesting holes and they jostle and scuffle for food incessantly in the streets and gardens.
For more information in English about the species see the RSPB species page. This gives a good overview of how to identify the bird, but no information on the bird in France.
For information in French see the Oiseaux.net species page.
