Wild Pansy - Viola tricolor

Scientific Name: Viola tricolor.

English Name: Wild Pansy, Johnny-Jump-Up or Heartsease.

French Name: La Pensée sauvage or la pensée tricolore.

5 Key Characters:
  • Flowers 1.5 - 2.5 cm from top to bottom.
  • Flowers yellow, blue-violet or a combination of both.
  • Petals flat.
  • Petals do not overlap.
  • Can be annual or perennial.
Lookalikes: Garden Pansy V. x wittrockiana, which generally has bigger flowers (although they reduce with each generation in the wild) and the petals overlap.

The specimen below may be a naturalised Garden Pansy several generations from its garden origins, or perhaps a hybrid between a Garden Pansy and a Wild Pansy. The petals overlap sufficiently to indicate it may not be a pure Wild Pansy.
Habitat: Wasteland, arable land, dry grassland, dunes.

Flowering Period: February-March-April-May-June-July-August-September.

Status: Common.

Photographed by Loire Valley Nature:

Photos are numbered from left to right and top to bottom. 1 Garden Pansy naturalised for several generations or hybrid with Wild Pansy.
