Wild Strawberry Fragaria vesca




Scientific Name: Fragaria vesca (Rosaceae).


English Name: Wild Strawberry; Woodland Strawberry; Alpine Strawberry; European Strawberry; Fraise des bois (Rose family).


French Name: Fraisier des bois (='woodland strawberry plant').

Lookalikes: Barren Strawberry Potentilla sterilis, which does not produce fruit and the terminal tooth of the leaves is shorter than the ones either side.


Habitat: Along tracks and paths, roadsides, embankments, hillsides, meadows, hedgerows, open woodland and clearings.


Flowering Period: April-May-June. Fruit June.


Status: Abundant throughout France. Has been eaten since prehistoric times. Widely cultivated until the development of the garden strawberry.
