Scientific Name: Orchis x angusticruris

English Name: Monkey x Lady Orchid hybrid

French Name: Hybride Orchis singe x pourpre

5 Key Characters:
  • a very variable mixture of the parent species.
  • usually has a dark 'cap'.
  • 'body' shape midway between the parent species.
  • occurs where both parents occur in close proximity and flower simultaneously.
  • at first glance usually looks like a Lady Orchid.
Lookalikes: Lady Orchid O. purpurea, Monkey Orchid O. simia, Military Orchid O. militaris.

Habitat: Calcareous grassland, woodland clearings and roadside banks where both parents are present, in full sun or partial shade.

Flowering Period: April-May-June.

Status: Quite common in the Touraine and can be seen within 5 km of Preuilly-sur-Claise. By far the most common of the Orchis spp hybrids.
